I've been thinking about mentors. Not mentors in the formal sense, but certain people you work with who are just on another level. Looking back across all the companies and projects and contracts I've been part of, there are all kinds of people. Some great, some terrible. And then some so exceptional they stick with you long after the work ends.
Ferris was one of those people.
Urban Dynamics was a small contracting firm. Mostly developers, minimal staff for project management and finance. Ferris ran it, and his experience and education let him land enterprise-level contracts that were way beyond what I'd been exposed to. We did contract web development, but the clients were big. Sophisticated networks, complex permissions, large teams, real security requirements. Everything had more funding, which meant everything needed enterprise-grade products.
I'd come from a startup background where I was proud of building things from scratch. Ferris operated in a completely different world.
I remember hearing a podcast with a former SpaceX or Tesla engineer who said they'd pay just to follow Elon Musk around and watch him work. That's how I felt about Ferris. His ability to walk into a room, assess the key people, understand what each person knew, and then explain things so everyone could actually fulfill their roles was something I'd never seen before. Not just within our team, but across other teams and other companies on the same contract.
He'd speed up conversations while somehow bringing everyone along. His communication skills were on another level, and he was always emphasizing the importance of writing and collaboration over rushing to code. Early planning meant writing things down, sharing documents, organizing people. I saw all of this firsthand and it rewired how I thought about the job.
Urban Dynamics completely changed how I think about identity and access management, single sign-on, and federated authentication. Ferris despised custom authentication systems. He'd cringe at user tables and hand-rolled login flows. His stance was clear: use enterprise-grade authentication providers. Okta for MeowWolf, Microsoft Active Directory for others.
Coming from startups, I used to be proud of building custom auth. Ferris made me see that for what it was. At enterprise scale, that stuff is a liability, not an achievement.
I have to be honest about this part. My contract ending wasn't because they fired me. It was because I wasn't showing up at the level they needed. I was juggling multiple clients, only giving Urban Dynamics 10-15 hours a week when they needed a full-time commitment. On top of that, I was dealing with a lawsuit and home construction that were eating all my energy. Maybe I'm too hard on myself, but I feel like I wasn't exceptional enough for a company that was thriving under someone who was great at building talented teams.
I underestimated how much those personal problems, combined with trying to learn enterprise networking and security on the fly, would overwhelm me. What I should have done was been upfront with Ferris. Told him what was going on, dropped the other clients, and proposed going all-in on Urban Dynamics to learn networking, security, and IAM properly. I needed a plan. Security courses, networking labs, certifications outside of work hours. I had none of that.
Later, I got enterprise experience at an engineering help desk, and I found myself applying Ferris's approach without even thinking about it. Probing organizations to find the right person for access or solutions. Setting up Intune and Autopilot, for example, meant spending a week tracking down contacts from network admins to people with actual authorization. That instinct came directly from watching Ferris work.
There was a company show-and-tell where I shared my Revenant Hollow project. I'd used Raspberry Pis and mixed reality to build an automated Halloween haunt. One of the engineers, I think it was Sebastian, was genuinely amazed that I could ideate projects like that. It caught me off guard.
That's when I realized a lot of developers compensate for weak ideation with raw technical skill. But with AI now generating clean code, ideas and architecture matter more than ever. It's like the difference between punk bands and metal bands. The Ramones prioritized the message over technical prowess. A lot of metal bands could shred but had nothing to say.
Despite the contract ending early, the experience was worth it. I compare it to cherished time with my late sister. You don't get to control how long you have with certain people. Some factors, like the lawsuit, were outside my control. But dropping the other clients and going all-in? That was on me.
If Ferris offered another chance, I'd walk in with a plan. Here's what went wrong last time. Here's what I've been studying. Here's my full commitment. No split attention. Urban Dynamics had this hybrid energy I haven't found since, a startup pace with enterprise-level impact. I learned about Google Cloud, complex IAM, subnetting. But the biggest thing I took away was understanding what it's like to work near someone who makes every hour you spend around them count. I want to find or build a company with that same kind of culture.
