Finding My Pitch: Digital Marketing, Engineering, and the Brick-and-Mortar Play

Talking It Out

I'm sitting here staring at my camera, trying to record an updated intro video for my online profiles. I've got all these things I want to say, all these ideas I want to communicate, ways I want to position myself and my company. But instead of just scribbling in a notebook or staring at my own face thinking, I decided to record a voice memo and freestyle it. Something about bringing my words to life with my own voice helps me organize my thoughts. Hearing the words come out of my mouth does something that writing them down doesn't.

So that's what this is. Working it out live, in real time.

The Three-Tiered Approach

I was talking to my wife last night and I think I said a lot of really good things, so I want to rehash part of that conversation. The way I'm trying to position CyberWorld Builders right now is a three-tiered approach. Three levels of upsell.

The initial offering, the low-risk, high-impact, most-bang-for-your-buck, getting-to-know-you cold outreach play is digital marketing. That's what I'm transitioning into. I've done contract work for digital marketing firms for many years. It's how I got started in the industry. I went on a pretty substantial side quest working with startups after that. Founders who had VC funding behind them, big budgets, building really interesting and novel features, just trying to make that new app that's gonna go viral and pay for ten other failed attempts. High-risk, high-budget projects. It was really fun for a long time. But the way the world is changing, it doesn't make sense long term to try to sustain that path. And honestly, it's less rewarding than I thought it was gonna be.

What I really want to do is help small businesses. Real brick-and-mortar companies that offer real services to their communities. I want to take my experience in software development as an engineer, combine it with modern AI-assisted development tools and automation workflows, and work with real companies. I want to learn as much as I can about your business. I want to know how you operate, what's working. I want to know about your dreams, what you want to achieve. I want to know what you believe should be possible. And then maybe what you just think would be awesome that you don't even believe is possible, but something inside you doesn't want to let the dream die.

The things I've seen in technology, especially in the past one to two years. Forget anything you ever thought about being impossible. I'm not saying go crazy with no plan. I'm saying let's go to first principles. What do you actually want to achieve? What do you think is possible? Let me learn what you've got going on, come back to my toolkit, figure out what we can reasonably achieve, get a plan together, and start working towards it.

So to rein it in: tier one is digital marketing services. Tier two is AI and automation workflows. And the ultimate upsell is a SaaS product, which is a lot more achievable than it has ever been, and it's not even close. Two years ago, I would have told you that you needed a $100,000 budget for things that I might be able to throw together in a day with a hundred bucks worth of tokens.

The Balance Between Fast and Right

There's a balance I need to strike. I need to signal that I have the technical ability as a software engineer to build anything you might dream up. But I also need to address the concern of over-engineering. It's really hard to find an engineer who has deep technical knowledge and command of the tools and principles of advanced software development, things that are secure, things that scale, things that are maintainable, and who will also work with you as a business owner to not over-engineer things. To keep cost and budget in mind. To ask the question: is there a quick, simple, stupid way to just throw something out there and get some quick results?

If you can build a proof of concept in an hour or less, it's worth it to throw something viable out there just to see what it does. We may throw it away. Or we may decide that it's showing real results out in the wild, and before we build a real business around it, we should go back and add proper logging, harden it for security, make sure it's going to scale. Maybe we throw out a ten-minute n8n automation workflow just as a proof of concept. If we start getting good results, put an hour into it, roll it into our core offering, integrate it into whatever custom CRM we might have stood up as a foundational system. Rinse and repeat.

I want to signal that I'm flexible and pragmatic. I can help you on a low budget, in a bootstrap situation, just popping out proof of concepts with whatever the fastest tool is. Sometimes that's n8n, sometimes that's Claude Code, sometimes I can take my own development tools and say, well, we could stitch together five community nodes, but just as fast I can bust out a custom node with Claude Code in my Cursor IDE and deploy it as part of our codebase. I want people to feel comfortable that I'm not going to waste their time and money on something we need to prove works by the end of the day.

But also, if it turns out to be something really viable that you want to build on and depend on as a core component of your business, you're in good hands. I'm a software engineer. I've built high-availability systems that scale. I've worked with security compliance requirements. I've been involved in an engineering capacity with auditors, software companies under compliance. We can take this thing as far as you want. I'm not a vibe coder who just picked up Replit, or someone depending solely on ChatGPT as a black box. I understand code on a deep technical level. I understand what secure systems look like, what high-availability systems look like, what it means to scale, how important observability is. I want to reassure you that I'm going to help you find the balance that makes sense.

The SpaceX Philosophy

One of the biggest mistakes that the smartest people make is optimizing something that shouldn't even exist. That's Elon's SpaceX philosophy. I want to find the parts that shouldn't exist. I want to delete them and focus on optimizing and automating things that are actually needed. I want to simplify your operation before we try to scale it. And then keep that balance as we grow, because it's a never-ending battle, constantly adding parts that aren't needed. Just like SpaceX: if you're not adding back 10% of what you deleted, you're not deleting enough. I want to apply that philosophy.

Structuring the Pitch

So here's what the actual video structure needs to look like. In the first ten to fifteen seconds, I need to introduce myself and CyberWorld Builders, establish the brand, establish my humanity, and immediately target the small businesses. The brick-and-mortar people who provide real services to their actual community. SEO, lead capture, analytics, lead generation, sales funnels, A/B testing. A lot of the specific services I'll drill down into later, after that initial drop-off point where everyone who stays is pretty much going to hang in there.

Right after the intro and pitch, I need to swerve into establishing authority as a software engineer. Something like: 10-plus years of software engineering experience, everything from VC-funded SaaS startups to security-compliant enterprise organizations. That one line tells a lot. And that's where my receipts are. I don't yet have the digital marketing case study I need. I'm collecting data, gathering results, getting closer each week. But I don't have a robust report showing real dollars from real campaigns that I personally implemented. We're close. So there's no point in trying to establish authority in digital marketing yet. I want to present specific, direct offerings and prioritize that market. But when it comes to authority, the only thing I can bring receipts for right now is software engineering. So I need to go hard with that.

So the flow is: intro, pitch, swerve to establish authority, then come back and address pain points.

The Pain Points

There are two main pain points I want to address. The first is about burning cash on ads without knowing what's actually working. Do you feel like you're burning cash when you buy ads because you don't really know what impact you're having? You're looking at your Google Analytics dashboard and you know where people are coming from, but what are they actually doing on the page? Your designer is presenting beautiful, modern graphics that are mind-blowing. You know you'd click on it. But you don't actually know if people are clicking on it. I can put granular analytics tracking at different parts of your page. Scroll depth. Click-through rates on every element. I love working with great designers, I love hearing their pitches, and I want to go code and deploy everything they dream up. But the truth is, we don't really know if they're right if we're not gathering the data and presenting conclusions. We gotta use science too.

The second pain point is about engineers who over-engineer. Maybe you've been burned by someone who's a legit engineer but they built Google-quality software for something you just wanted to prove the concept on. You didn't even know if it was worth using yet, and you paid for six months of architecture. I've been freelancing for over ten years. I know how to plan projects in a way that makes sense. I'm not going to build you a cathedral when you need a tent.

And then there's the person with the secret dream. Someone who's got a SaaS product idea on the back burner. They don't talk about it a lot, they're not open about it with friends, they might even be careful mentioning it in front of their wife. But when they're alone, totally unfiltered, they're thinking: if I could just meet the right person who has the right perspective, someone willing to validate themselves with real, tangible growth in revenue first. Someone with the open-mindedness and flexibility of a young builder, but the experience of a seasoned pro. Someone who is technically proficient and has real business sense. I want to stoke those flames, just a little. I want to at least poke at that and get those juices flowing. But I want to really lay into what I can do in the short term first. Low risk, getting to know you, the things you know you need.

I feel like I'm making a lot more progress than if I'd just sat there scribbling in a notebook. We're onto something here.
