Early Adventures in Freelance Web Development: Lessons from the WordPress Era

After my first WordPress job, another came. Then another. Pretty soon it was all WordPress, all the time. With my experience in JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, and Linux servers, I started marketing myself as a full-stack developer, and that kept steady work coming in for years.

Custom Plugins Became My Thing

Clients always had modified plugins, which was a constant headache. Updates would overwrite their customizations or blow open security holes. So I learned to write custom plugins, either hooking into existing ones or reverse-engineering their functionality to build something actually maintainable. That became my niche. I could work on themes if I had to, but I focused on back-end development. Data management was just more rewarding to me than design ever was.

A Small Town With a Big Internet Connection

Freelancing opened up a global market, and I needed that. Where I lived, the opportunities were basically limited to defense contracts in Huntsville, which meant long commutes and security clearances. Remote work let me connect with entrepreneurs all over the world who cared about what I could do, what I'd already done, how long it would take, and how much it cost. They didn't care about degrees. I could offer to prove myself as a contractor, with the understanding that if it didn't work out, we'd just part ways. No unemployment claims, no lawsuits.

From $12 an Hour to Turning Down Work

I started on Upwork with zero reputation, offering free estimates at $12 to $13 an hour. That matched local factory wages, which tells you something about where I was at. As positive reviews came in, I raised my rate to $20, then $25. Invitations started flooding in. I remember once having to raise my rate just to slow down the offers while I was driving to Huntsville. Being a native English speaker was a huge advantage too. My ability to communicate clearly with Americans and Australians made a real difference, even with minor terminology quirks between cultures.

The Clients Who Taught Me the Hard Way

Hard lessons came fast. One client demanded hundreds of dollars' worth of work for $20, straight-up exploiting my inexperience. To get out of it, I offered to do a little more work for another $20, closed the contract, and ghosted her. It was the only way to avoid negative feedback.

Then there was Gal. He expected me to pivot from WordPress to some unrelated technology after unpaid training. I refused, kept the payment, and won the Upwork dispute. But his negative feedback cost me real opportunities down the line. Looking back, I should have just offered a partial refund to protect my reputation. That would have been the smarter play. Taking on outdated technologies was another mistake I made early on. It pulled me away from learning modern skills when I should have been moving forward.

Reputation Is the Whole Game

In a global market, your reputation is everything. I learned early to screen clients, communicate clearly, and never engage with negative feedback. Responding to it just amplifies it. Most of my clients became long-term relationships, and I got better at ending the ones that weren't working on good terms. Picking projects that actually aligned with where I wanted my career to go, and screening out the unreasonable people before signing a contract. Those were the lessons that really shaped how I freelanced from that point on.
